I have, historically, not wanted to review TWICE albums because I just have such a track record of loving the title song and not liking anything else. And because I love TWICE, I don’t want to just spend an entire post saying “I don’t like this” so I waited. Patiently. And here it is! A TWICE album that I genuinely love in its entirety!
This song is amazing–as are all TWICE title songs–but my absolute favorite part is the pre-chorus with Sana. There’s something about that rings familiar of TWICE’s old comebacks without being an exact replica of an older song. I also totally adore Chaeyoung’s “Fancy? Oooh.” This song was upbeat, catchy, and yet totally unlike any of TWICE’s past concepts. It was a brilliant way to bridge the old fans and the new fans who may not have liked girly concepts.
STUCK IN MY HEAD
I thought this was a solid song. I liked the vocals and the flow of the song was great. That’s something that I tend to notice: girl groups don’t always have competent flow between the chorus and the verse. This one did, however, and I don’t have any other complaints about it. It’s not necessarily the most memorable song on the album for me, but I can still acknowledge it’s a good song.
GIRLS LIKE US
I really loved this one. I think the production and the sound of it are so creative. TWICE has killer drops and the lead up to the chorus is no exception. I think of this as one of the songs that play in the background of movies when things are going really well for the main character. This is one of those feel-good songs that you can’t help but love.
This song reminds me a lot of GIRLS LIKE US, but I think that’s just because it’s so different from anything that I’m used to hearing from TWICE. I really enjoyed the chorus of this song; it’s one of those choruses that you can learn in ten seconds and then you have it stuck in your head forever. In this case, though, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
TURN IT UP
The intro to this track is so misleading, but I kind of love that. After a soft, acoustic moment, you’re thrown into typical fast-paced TWICE. For a song called “TURN IT UP,” you would expect to be turning up the whole way through. I can’t say that I did that, but I did lose it at Dahyun’s raps. I can see this being one of those songs you blast in the car and look like a crazy person at red lights because you’re screaming it at the top of your lungs.
I expected this song to be super sweet and sugary since that’s what TWICE is known for and that is what the song title implies. However, this song is–dare I say it–sexy? Not explicitly, but it’s definitely more intimate of a song than most of their other songs. Their vocals are softer and the song itself is slower. It reminds me of late 90s pop songs in the best way, and this is probably my favorite song on the album.
I don’t have anything negative to say. TWICE is one of my favorite girl groups and they consistently deliver high quality title tracks, so I should have expected that this album would be fire. Did you like the new TWICE album? Let me know in the comments!
