I debated long and hard about putting OH MY GIRL on this list. The truth is: they’ve been in hot water lately–and all the time–so it’s hard as a fan to support their music. That said, I also think it’s silly to try and pretend that you didn’t like something just because you later learned that it came from someone problematic. It still happened, and you didn’t know any better so it’s okay to acknowledge that you were a fan.
That said, this was such a wonderful era and title track. At first glance, this looks like a generic girl group debut: cute, girly, with catchy and repetitive lyrics that can get stuck in your head and make you want to listen to it again and again. But if you look beyond that, you’ll find a song that was actually built to succeed. It was produced by Hyuk Shin who has worked with a ton of popular K-pop artists in addition to Justin Bieber. The line-up for the rest of the EP is just as impressive–and cohesive without feeling redundant.
I will admit: the music video would be pretty forgettable if it wasn’t for the choreography and the song. It’s a cute video, with the girls all in pastels and shooting little arrows at the people so they’ll fall in love, but it’s not anything wildly cinematic. Still, it was a nice introduction to OMG in a way that let the girls shine.
