K-Bops in K-Pop

Oh, Monsta X. One of my favorite groups that I almost never talk about. I remember listening to this song for the first time and thinking this was the most scandalous thing I’d ever seen. These young men pulling up their shirts for the camera? My pearls were clutched.

I was actually super skeptical of this song when I first heard it. I liked it, but it made me think that they had no range. I was worried that the boys weren’t capable of being soft and sensitive. I searched for a song that would counterbalance the sexiness of this song and I found Amen. While I loved Amen, I found myself coming back to Hero (and not just to stare/drool at Wonho’s abs).

There is a second version of this song that has a slightly different sound, but I honestly don’t think it will ever be as good as the original. I loved the horn in the chorus and I loved the easy catchiness of the lyrics. Even now I can’t help thinking, “I can be your hero, I can be your man.”

Setting aside how good the song is, I also seriously love the choreo (again, not just because of abs). It matched the theme of the song without being distracting, and it gave the boys a place to shine. Of course, over the years, the boys’ dancing has gotten better, but this showed they had a lot of talent to begin with.
