Oh God, the emotional turmoil of I Need U. I listened to this song for the first time and I honestly could not wrap my head around it. It was so sad and weirdly tech-y, and everyone said that the music video was traumatizing so I didn’t even want to see it.

Still, I was in the throes of first love with BTS so I was determined to love it. I watched every live stage and eventually learned to see what was amazing about it. The thing that really sold me on it is the choreography. I think that was the first time that I saw a K-pop group have such incredible coordination and such creativity.

It is no secret that I think that HYYH is one of the greatest albums of all time. It is a masterpiece that captures the unique nuances of being young and feeling like your youth is slipping away even as you’re enjoying yourself.

This song is about being in love but it’s more than that. If you watch the music video, you see all of the complexities of being a young person. It was an incredible piece of theater at a time when BigHit didn’t have the money for a gigantic production. Honestly, it was such a testament to their talent.

What song did you think of for the letter I? What’s your favorite sad track? Do you like BTS (you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t)? Let me know in the comments!

  1. My very first BTS song! It actually didn’t stand out for me but got my attention enough to peak my curiosity. It was then that I went down the rabbit hole with BTS and eventually became an ARMY.
